What Is MBTI / The 16 Personalities Test?

MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) is one of the most widely used personality classification tools in the world. It was developed by Katharine Briggs and her daughter Isabel Myers, based on Swiss psychologist Carl Jung's theory of psychological types.

The core idea behind MBTI is that behavioral differences between people are not random — they stem from different preferences in how we perceive the world and make decisions. By combining four dimensions, MBTI classifies personality into 16 types, each with unique thinking patterns, behavioral tendencies, and potential strengths.

The 16 Personalities test (such as our P16 test) builds on MBTI theory while incorporating modern psychological research, making results more accurate and practical. It's not about labeling you — it's about helping you understand your natural tendencies so you can make smarter decisions in career choices, relationships, and personal growth.

The Four Core Dimensions

MBTI describes personality preferences across four dimensions, each with two opposing tendencies:

1. Energy Direction: Extraversion (E) vs. Introversion (I)

This dimension describes where you draw your energy from.

  • Extraversion: Gains energy from social interaction and external activities; tends to act first, then reflect
  • Introversion: Gains energy from solitude and inner reflection; tends to think first, then act

Note that extraversion/introversion does not equal "talkative/quiet." An introvert can be very articulate in familiar domains, and an extravert also needs alone time.

2. Information Processing: Sensing (S) vs. Intuition (N)

This dimension describes how you take in and process information.

  • Sensing: Focuses on concrete facts and details; trusts direct experience; attends to present reality
  • Intuition: Focuses on patterns and possibilities; trusts inspiration and hunches; attends to future potential

3. Decision Making: Thinking (T) vs. Feeling (F)

This dimension describes how you make decisions.

  • Thinking: Tends to decide based on logic and objective analysis; values fairness and consistency
  • Feeling: Tends to decide based on values and impact on others; values harmony and empathy

4. Lifestyle: Judging (J) vs. Perceiving (P)

This dimension describes how you engage with the external world.

  • Judging: Prefers a planned, organized lifestyle; likes things to have clear conclusions
  • Perceiving: Prefers a flexible, open lifestyle; likes to keep options available

Four Temperament Groups and 16 Personality Types

Based on the combination of four dimensions, the 16 personality types fall into four temperament groups:

Frequently Asked Questions

Can MBTI test results change?

Your core personality type is generally stable, but the strength of certain dimension preferences may shift across different life stages. For example, someone who prefers P (Perceiving) in youth may develop stronger J (Judging) traits with age. We recommend retesting every few years.

Is MBTI scientifically valid?

MBTI is based on Jung's psychological type theory, with nearly a century of research history. While academic debate exists about its reliability and validity, it is widely used globally in corporate training, career counseling, and personal development as a tool for self-awareness and team communication. Modern 16 Personalities tests (like P16) incorporate more empirical research to further improve accuracy.

Is there a "best" personality type?

No. Every personality type has unique strengths and areas for growth. The value of MBTI lies not in judging which type is better, but in helping you understand your natural tendencies, leverage your strengths, and address your blind spots.

My result is close to 50/50 on one dimension — what does that mean?

This is perfectly normal. Many people don't have extreme preferences on every dimension. It means you have good flexibility on that dimension and can switch modes depending on the situation. Try reading descriptions of both types to see which better matches your everyday behavior.

What's the difference between MBTI and the Big Five?

MBTI classifies personality into 16 discrete types, making it intuitive and easy to understand. The Big Five (OCEAN) scores across five continuous dimensions and is more widely accepted in academia. Our P16 test combines the strengths of both — providing type-based results for easy understanding and dimensional scores for precise analysis.
